Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has announced the withdrawal of a proposed retail electricity tariff review application that had been submitted by Kenya Power and could have resulted in higher electricity costs from July 1 through 2029.

Kenya Power had lodged the application to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority on March 31, seeking a review of electricity tariffs.

However, in a press briefing on Wednesday, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said the application had been withdrawn to protect livelihoods and ease the burden on consumers amid concerns over the rising cost of electricity.

“Following the withdrawal of the application, the current retail electricity tariffs shall remain in force and unchanged, unless otherwise lawfully reviewed in accordance with the Energy Act and applicable regulatory procedures,” said the CS.

The Energy CS made an assurance that the withdrawal will not affect the continued delivery of electricity services. Consumers and businesses are to have uninterrupted access to electricity under the current tariff structure.

The ministry has attributed this decision to their goal of a sustainable energy sector, economic growth and protection of households, businesses and industries from cost escalation, safeguarding livelihoods.
