The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has defended its performance in the fight against corruption, citing improved conviction rates and increased recovery of stolen public funds, even as it warned that graft remains on the rise.

Speaking at an anti-corruption workshop for media practitioners, EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi A. Mohamud said the commission has achieved a 72 per cent conviction rate over the last two years.

He added that the agency has recovered at least Ksh.7.8 billion in stolen public funds during the same period, underscoring what he termed as steady progress in enforcement.

However, Mohamud expressed concern over the scale of losses recorded in recent years, revealing that approximately Ksh.10.74 billion has been lost to corruption in the last two years alone.

He noted that despite ongoing prosecutions and asset recovery efforts, corruption levels have continued to rise, pointing to gaps in the current approach.

Mohamud told participants that there is an urgent need to shift focus towards prevention, arguing that enforcement alone is not sufficient to win the fight against graft.

He highlighted digitisation as one of the key tools that has already shown positive results in curbing corruption.

According to the EACC boss, the adoption of digital systems in government services has enhanced transparency, reduced human contact, and minimized opportunities for bribery.

Mohamud called on media practitioners to play a more active role in promoting accountability and raising public awareness, noting that the fight against corruption requires a collective effort from all sectors of society.

He emphasized that strengthening preventive mechanisms, alongside sustained enforcement, will be critical in reversing the upward trend of corruption in the country.
