Deputy IG Eliud Lagat records statement with IPOA on Albert Ojwang's murder

Embattled Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat has recorded a statement with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) in connection with the death of teacher Albert Ojwang’.

Lagat had earlier filed a complaint against Ojwang’, accusing him of publishing false information. The teacher was subsequently arrested at his rural home in Homa Bay and later transferred to the Central Police Station in Nairobi, where he died in a police cell just hours after being detained.

According to sources within IPOA who spoke on condition of anonymity, Lagat was grilled for several hours after being summoned to provide information relevant to the ongoing investigation.

IPOA has since confirmed that more than 20 police officers have recorded statements in relation to the mysterious death, as pressure mounts for transparency and accountability in the case.

Lagat stepped aside on Monday amid growing public and institutional pressure to allow for what authorities have termed an “uncompromised” investigation.

The probe continues as IPOA seeks to establish the exact circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death while in police custody.
