DCI seizes Ksh.17 million worth of bhang, fake US dollars, and ivory in week-long raid

According to the DCI, officers from the National Police Service teamed up with various enforcement and state agencies, resulting in major seizures of narcotics, counterfeit goods, and several high-profile arrests.

Codenamed 'Usalama XI', the Eastern and Southern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organizations (EAPCCO and SARPCCO)  formed the joint regional initiative to disrupt transactional crimes including motor vehicle theft, drug and human trafficking, wildlife crimes, terrorism, mineral smuggling, illicit arms trade, and copper cable theft.

In Lang'ata, detectives from the Transnational Organized Crimes Unit (TOCU) and the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) seized a residence in Royal Park Estate and discovered counterfeit US currency valued at $31,700 (Ksh.4 million) on October 8, 2025.

The suspect, Nanji Nabil Taj 32, was arrested on-site.

At the coast, the team intercepted a Mercedes-Benz truck en route from Mombasa to Nairobi where they uncovered 9½ sacks of cannabis sativa weighing 568.85 kilograms, with estimated value of Ksh.17 million. 

The driver, Shem Horace Obonyo, 38, was arrested as the truck and narcotics were seized.

In Eldoret, detectives took down a digital piracy operation run by Kelvin Kiplang'at, a suspect linked to the illegal sale and installation of pirated WAKA Internet Streaming and IPTV services. 

They also recovered two mobile phones, 135 advertising flyers, and the WAKA TV pirate control panel, through which detectives disconnected 64 unauthorized subscribers.

In Shalom area along Mombasa Road, two suspects were arrested in possession of five elephant tusks valued at around Ksh. 7.8 million on October 6, 2025.

The duo was processed at the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Headquarters before being booked at Lang’ata Police Station pending arraignment.
