As part of its corporate business development plans, Bamburi Cement Chief Executive Officer Mr Geoffrey Ndugwa said the firm is pursuing a commercial opportunity to competitively supply the Lamu Crude Oil Refinery with quality cement and concrete products throughout the project development cycle.
With government assurance that the Ksh.2 trillion project will use locally manufactured products, Ndugwa said the firm will explore delivering Bamburi DuraCem Cement, an eco-friendly, sulfate- and chloride-resistant 42.5 grade speciality cement made in Kenya, for large or marine construction projects.
In its commercial proposition to Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemical SEZ, Bamburi is also offering its locally manufactured Bamburi Cement Ultra-series speciality Concrete products, designed for precision and performance.
Locally manufactured, the Bamburi Ultra-series concrete products include Ultra-Waterproof Concrete for moisture-prone areas, Ultra-Self Compacting Concrete for seamless pours, Pervious Concrete for sustainable drainage, and Ultra-Fibre Reinforced Concrete for crack-resistant durability.
“At Bamburi Cement, we are celebrating the Dangote Group and the Government of Kenya milestone as the construction works for the world’s largest single-train crude oil refinery get underway,” Ndugwa said.
“The civil and related construction works for the 700,000 barrel-per-day refinery will consume an approximate 1 million tons of cement and concrete solutions, and we are well positioned to manufacture and deliver to the project site from our Mombasa plant.”
Official reports indicate that the refinery will have the flexibility to process a wide variety of crude oils, from light to heavy grades, enabling the use of feedstocks sourced from multiple regions and reducing reliance on any single supply source.
In recent times, Bamburi Cement has been the cement and concrete solutions provider for complex national development projects, including Talanta Sports Stadium Development, Rironi Mau Summit Road, Standard Gauge Railway, Dongo Kundu Highway, Mwache Dam, Thwake Dam and Makupa Bridge, among others.
In recent months, Bamburi Cement, a member of the Amsons Group, has reinforced its strategic ambition to secure long-term clinker self-sufficiency, enhance production capacity, and support national infrastructure demands.
As part of its corporate business development plans, Bamburi Cement late last year signed a US$250 million (Kshs 32 billion) Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract with Sinoma CBMI Construction Co., Ltd for the construction of a turnkey clinkerisation factory in Matuga, Kwale County.
The construction of the state-of-the-art 1.6 million tonnes-a-year new clinkerisation plant, incorporating advanced, carbon-neutral technologies to reduce environmental impact, is part of Bamburi Cement's corporate strategy to double its production capacity for quality cement and concrete products, powering Kenya’s infrastructure development and economic transformation.
Through the turnkey clinkerisation factory, Bamburi Cement Plc aims to more than double its clinker and ultimately its cement production capacities, from 1 million Tons to 2.6 million Tons for Clinker and from 1.8 million Tons to 4 million Tons for quality cement.
