Concerns are emerging over the possible collapse of several coffee cooperative societies in Bungoma County due to rising debt levels.

Ndiwa Naibei, chairman of Kapkrong Cooperative Society in Mount Elgon Constituency, has warned that many societies are at risk as a result of the alleged misuse of farmers’ funds.

He noted that such mismanagement has left committees struggling to meet their financial obligations, forcing them to take loans from banks and other institutions to pay farmers.

According to Naibei, this continued borrowing is contributing to an increasing debt burden, raising fears about the sustainability of some cooperative societies in the region.

He also called on farmers to embrace organic farming practices, saying this would help protect soil quality and prevent degradation associated with poor farming methods.
