Citizen TV reporter Emily Chebet is among journalists selected for the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship.

Chebet, a health, science, and environment journalist, will join other fellows for an academic year at Stanford University in the United States.

The class of 2027 consists of 13 journalists from a range of news organizations, freelancers and others who are working in organizations that provide critical support to journalists and newsrooms.

The fellowship is intended to support professionals in reimagining the future of journalism in an era of escalating threats to press freedom and media sustainability.

The 9-month-long program also inducts journalists to purposeful solutions to help build independence and their effective safety.

According to the JSK Director, Dawn Garcia, journalists are increasingly facing challenges in their work.

“To strengthen journalism’s independence, bolster its essential role in building informed, democratic communities, and to keep journalists safe, we need multidisciplinary approaches. I’m excited by the mix of journalism innovators, leaders, and those from support organizations we’ve selected to learn together in a stimulating environment and be a catalyst for change,” said Garcia.

The fellowship will provide individual coaching to the new JSK fellows.

Additionally, the fellows are offered a chance to build their own experience in the tailored workshops, where they gain access to adequate resources at the Stanford campus.

Chebet has welcomed the selection, terming it as an opportunity to represent Kenya, and Africa at large.

“This fellowship is a unique opportunity to engage with some of the world’s leading thinkers and innovators, exchange ideas, and explore solutions for the future of journalism. I hope to bring those experiences back home to help drive meaningful change and innovation across Africa,” said Chebet.
