Bomet police have shut down Bethel Church, located in Kapkwen on the outskirts of Bomet town, after revelations that members were being caned as part of a ritual to drive out evil spirits.

Bomet County Police Commander Edward Imbwaga stated that two women fled from the church’s altar after they were unable to endure the beatings administered by the pastor, assisted by ushers.

The women, identified as Mercy Rono (38) and Mercy Cherotich (30), managed to escape and reported the matter to Kapkwen Police Station. They were later taken to Bomet Health Centre for medical treatment.

Bomet County Health Chief Officer Felix Langat confirmed that the victims had sustained bruises across their bodies. They received medical attention before being referred back to the police to fill out a P3 form for assault documentation.

Authorities are now searching for the church pastor and other suspects, who managed to evade arrest. Police have also launched investigations into the church’s registration status and operational history.

"We are conducting inquiries to establish whether the church is legally registered and how it has been operating for so long. Reports indicate that most of its members are women," said Commander Imbwaga.

Following the incident, outraged members of the public threatened to demolish the church structure if the authorities allowed it to reopen.
