Chesamisi's national title fuels ambition for East Africa volleyball glory

Chesamisi High School’s boys’ volleyball team has set its sights on conquering the East African stage in the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) after securing the national championship last week.

The national triumph has boosted the team’s confidence ahead of the regional competition, with head coach Isaac Muresha saying his players are determined to build on their success.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Muresha said the team has spent the past few days addressing weaknesses identified during the national championships, with the improvements expected to be crucial against some of the region’s top school teams.

The players have also received encouragement from the school principal, which Muresha says has provided additional motivation ahead of the tournament.

“I have corrected the mistakes and worked on our weak areas. My players' height is not for volleyball, they are kids, compared to other teams from Uganda and Rwanda, but the school principal is motivating the students,” said Muresha.

Muresha joined Chesamisi in 2025 after leaving Namwela Boys High School, where he guided the team to the East African volleyball championship in 2023.

His previous success at the regional level gives him valuable experience as Chesamis seeks to make a strong impression in this year’s competition.

Away from his coaching duties, Muresha also works as a driver of the school’s student bus, combining his professional responsibilities with his role in developing the volleyball team.

“First of all, I am a driver. Before assigning me other duties, you first employ me as a driver, then the rest we can discuss on contract basis,” he added.

Chesamisi has been drawn in Group A alongside Kenya’s Matiliku, Rwanda’s Nyanza TSS, Uganda’s Bukedea and Tanzania’s Lumala.

The East African school volleyball championships are scheduled to begin August 12 in Tanzania’s Morogoro Region, with Chesamisi hoping to translate its national success into regional glory.
