Top-flight debutants Chema Volleyball Club pulled off a massive upset on Day One of the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) National Men’s League semifinal playoffs, completely overpowering former champions Kenya Prisons 3-1 sets at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on Friday.

Chema, who earned promotion from Division Two this season, showed zero stage fright in their maiden playoff appearance, dictating the tempo from the opening serve to secure a historic 25-17, 25-21, 16-25, and 28-26 victory.

The Juja-based newcomers were a joy to watch in the opening two sets, executing sharp blocks and lethal spikes that left a disoriented Kenya Prisons squad completely out of options.

Desperate to rescue the match, Kenya Prisons head coach Denis Mokua made a crucial tactical substitution in the third set, shifting natural outside hitter Stephen Maluki to the opposite department to form a formidable attacking partnership with captain Jairus Kipkosgei and Dennis Esokon.

The tactical tweak paid off handsomely, enabling the warders to dominate the third set 16-25 and force a fourth.

The fourth set transformed into an intense, point-for-point battle as both teams threw everything on the line.

Despite Prisons' late resilience, Chema held their nerve during the high-stakes deuce to claim the set 28-26 and trigger wild celebrations at Kasarani.

With the playoff matches being played in a best-of-three format, Kenya Prisons will be under immense pressure to return the favour on Saturday in the return leg, while the soaring debutants will look to complete a famous double and seal a spot in the national finals.

The day's late action saw an absolute thriller in the second men's semi final, where Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) survived a nerve-shredding scare to edge out Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) 3-2.

KDF quickly sounded a warning note by snatching a tight opening set 23-25, but the Dockers found their rhythm to power through the next two sets 25-20 and 25-19. Refusing to go down without a fight, the military men lunged back in a tightly contested fourth set, taking it 20-25 to force a dramatic tiebreaker.

In the decisive fifth set, it was KPA who displayed superior nerves under immense pressure, clawing their way to a narrow 15-13 victory to seal a hard-fought advantage ahead of Saturday's return leg.

In the women's semifinal fixtures, league heavyweights KCB and defending champions Kenya Pipeline took early command of their respective series with convincing Day One wins.

KCB kicked off the afternoon by brushing aside rivals Kenya Prisons 3-1. The Bankers capitalized on Prisons’ shaky reception early on to easily sweep the opening two sets 25-14 and 25-18.

Although Prisons rallied to take the third set 21-25 and briefly threatened an upset late in the fourth, KCB held firm to seal the final set 25-22 and wrap up the match.

Meanwhile, reigning champions Kenya Pipeline made light work of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), cruising to a straight-sets victory of 25-17, 25-21, and 28-26.

The Oilers dominated almost every aspect of the first two sets before weathering a fierce, dramatic resistance from the sleuths in the final set to stand just one win away from the finals.

All teams return to the Kasarani court on Saturday for the high-stakes Game Two fixtures.
