The Kenyan Network of Cancer Organizations (KENCO) has welcomed the Government’s move to enhance the cancer benefits package under the Social Health Authority (SHA).

The annual cancer benefits package has received a significant boost from Ksh.550,000 to Ksh.800,000 and an additional enhancement of the Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund allocation from Ksh. 150,000 to Ksh.400,000.

In a statement on Tuesday, the organisation marked the move as a major milestone in Kenya’s journey towards equitable, accessible, and patient-centred cancer care under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda.

Key updates in the package include oncology consultations, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, specialized treatment options and supportive care services.

Also, they have welcomed the inclusion of enhanced access to advanced diagnostics such as CT scans, MRI, PET scans, and PSMA PET scans.

The Oncologists have noted that the shift towards comprehensive cancer care requires an extension beyond clinical interventions to include emotional, psychological, nutritional and supportive care for both patients and caregivers.

In view of these, the organization has called on the government to effectively implement these reforms to ensure that all patients benefit.

They urge the government to consider the proper actualisation of seamless access to benefits, the elimination of approval delays, and strengthened provider reimbursement.

Further, KENCO has applauded the government for recent investments, including the installation and commissioning of modern Linear Accelerator (LINAC) radiotherapy machines at Kenyatta National Hospital and the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital.

"These investments are critical in addressing longstanding infrastructure and treatment access gaps and reflect positive momentum in strengthening Kenya’s oncology ecosystem," the statement read in part.
