Bungoma Queens chairman Erick Marango has attributed the team's disappointing start to the Women's Premier League season to defensive weaknesses and the absence of a head coach.

The Bungoma-based side suffered a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Mathare United Women at the weekend, extending their wait for a first victory after six matches.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Marango blamed defensive lapses and a lack of concentration for the heavy defeat. He noted that all five goals were conceded in the first half, with Mathare finding the net just a minute after kick-off.

"We lost the match because of the many mistakes we made. Our defenders also struggled because they are not used to playing on artificial turf. Thirdly, we conceded three of the five goals from set pieces. That tells you we are not good at handling and defending set pieces," he said.

The early goal put Bungoma Queens under immediate pressure, with their defensive frailties proving costly as Mathare took control of the contest.

Marango also revealed that the team have been without a head coach for their last three matches following the departure of Ben Barasa.

"We have played three matches without a head coach. He was bullied and demotivated. We have also faced financial challenges at the club, but we are now in a better position. We only need to improve on the technical aspects," he added.

According to Marango, the coaching vacuum has affected the team's performances and contributed to their failure to collect maximum points in recent outings.

However, he assured supporters that the club are working to resolve the situation and expect to appoint a new head coach before their next league fixture against Ulinzi.

The coaching vacancy comes at a difficult time for Bungoma Queens, who are struggling to find their footing in the top flight.

After six matches, they have collected just two points from two draws, losing the other four fixtures.

Their tally leaves them 11th in the 12-team standings, just one place above bottom-placed Vihiga Queens, who have a single point.

With their next encounter against Ulinzi approaching, Bungoma Queens will be hoping a new coach can stabilise the team and revive their campaign before the gap to the other sides widens further.
