A public exchange of words between Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino was witnessed on Sunday, with the latter shifting focus to the Nairobi County school feeding programme.

According to Babu, the feeding programme dubbed 'Dishi na County’ that was launched by Sakaja in August has not been beneficial to Nairobi children.

“Each school should have well equiped kitchen and staff, Sakajas 10 kitchens cannot feed hundreds of thousands of learners in Nairobi, the ratio of kitchens to kids is ridiculous, but again someone who ran away from school and is using fake degree certificates cannot understand this simple facts,” the MP wrote in a tweet.

The MP said that the programme, designed to provide daily meals to public primary school and Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) pupils at a nominal fee of Ksh.5 per day, should have been managed by schools and not the county.

He also claimed the programme is causing disruptions in school schedules due to delays in food delivery caused by transport issues, labeling it as nothing short of a scandal.

He questioned how the money collected is utilized, given that there is a budget for the programme.

“Ksh.5 per day from each parent by 1000 parents in every school amounts to 5000/- per day by 22 active school days in a month=110000/- per month. There are 208 public primary schools in Nairobi so you get 110000 multiplied by 208=22,880,000/-. In one year this amount=12 times 22,880,000=274,560,000/-,” Babu stated.

Governor Sakaja initiated the 'Dishi na County' programme with the intention of providing daily nutrition to approximately 250,000 children in Nairobi.

Special dietary considerations for children with health conditions were also part of the programme after assessments by medical practitioners at the school or ECD center level.
