Matiang'i, Munya, Kivuti join Azimio in major pre-2027 shake-up

The decisions were made at a joint Council and National Executive Committee meeting held on Monday at the SKM Command Centre in Nairobi, chaired by coalition leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka.

Announcing the resolutions, Secretary General Caroli Omondi said the Council had agreed to restructure the party's various organs and to move ahead with the rebranding of the coalition.

The Council admitted three new members: Jubilee Party deputy leader Fred Matiang'i, Party of National Unity leader Peter Munya, and Devolution Empowerment Party leader Lenny Kivuti.

The coalition further resolved to extend invitations to additional parties, among them the Democratic Action Party Kenya (DAP-K) led by Eugene Wamalwa, Umoja na Maendeleo led by Kawira Mwangaza, the People's Democratic Party led by Omingo Magara, and the Democratic Party led by JB Muturi. All four leaders were present at the Command Centre.

Omondi said DAP-K, a founding member of the coalition, had been invited to rejoin, and that Wamalwa had confirmed the party would do so subject to its internal processes. The other invited leaders similarly confirmed they would join once their parties complete their internal procedures.

The National Executive Committee also approved the admission of Abdi Hassan from the North Eastern region into the National Executive Council, in a move the coalition said broadens its national representation.

The meeting further mandated Kalonzo to continue engaging like-minded parties and formations, including the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), the People's Liberation Party (PLP), the United Green Movement, and the Linda Mwananchi Party once it is registered, with the aim of strengthening unity ahead of the election.

The meeting was attended by Executive Director Philip Kisia, Omondi, and representatives from affiliate parties including the Wiper Patriotic Front, Jubilee, ODM, NARC, KANU and PNU.
