The accident occurred on Friday, claiming the lives of 27 people travelling on the bus and the truck driver, according to Morogoro Regional Fire and Rescue Force chief Joseph Mwasabeja.
Mwasabeja said the passenger bus burst into flames following the collision and was completely burnt out, making rescue efforts difficult.
Preliminary investigations suggest the crash occurred after the truck driver, who was travelling from Iringa towards Dar es Salaam, attempted to overtake other vehicles without taking adequate precautions.
The manoeuvre reportedly resulted in the truck colliding head-on with the passenger bus, which was travelling in the opposite direction along the highway.
The bus was operating on the Dar es Salaam-Mbeya route at the time of the accident.
Authorities were yet to establish the full number of people injured in the crash, as emergency teams continued to assess the situation and account for those involved.
Some victims were taken to hospital for treatment, while the whereabouts of other passengers remained unclear at the time of reporting.
Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital public relations officer Scholastica Ndunga said the facility would release an official statement providing details of the fatalities and the number of people admitted for treatment.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision are ongoing, with authorities expected to provide further updates on the casualties and the condition of survivors.
The crash adds to concerns over road safety in Tanzania, particularly the dangers posed by unsafe overtaking on major highways, where vehicles travelling in opposite directions share the same carriageway.
