Police in Muhoroni sub-county are probing an arson incident after unknown persons set ablaze over 30 hectares of sugarcane plantations belonging to Chemelil Sugar Factory.

The factory's security supervisor reported to the police that they noticed a fire emanating from the factory's sugar plantations from around 1 pm on Monday.

The fire spread across several blocks and destroyed nearly 30 hectares of cane.

Police officers from Chemelil police post and DCI officers visited the scene. They established that the suspects took advantage of the windy conditions, which aided the quick spread of the fire.

Police say 4 blocks already had mature cane ready for harvest, while one block had immature cane.

The motive of the incident is yet to be established.
