The Ghanaian coach said they shifted from an aggressive, high-pressing man-to-man system to a more pragmatic, low-block and transition-heavy style to counter Ingwe as they powered to an unprecedented 22nd league crown.
“I am happy we've won, but it hasn't been easy. The journey has been difficult. Also, there was a good competition from our friends, AFC (Leopards).
“That made us even think deeper as to the things we would do. But I must say the boys have done very well. They have coped with every challenge that...,” said Akonnor.
Akonnor added that he was still gutted by the 1-0 defeat to Leopards in the Mashemeji derby fixture last December although Gor Mahia secured a win in the return leg of the match, universally regarded as the pinnacle of Kenyan football.
“It was crazy( a defeat to Leopards in the first round). It was a difficult moment for us, especially because we knew that that meant a lot to our fans, and it also have the bragging rights to the fans.
“In the second phase, before we met them, we didn't sleep. We thought a lot. We watched them very well, tactically, with the approach of the game. And of course, what was important was how we prepared them for that match.”
Gor reclaimed their title after finishing top with 69 points, five ahead of second placed Leopards who will mount another title challenge next season as they seek to end a near three-decade drought.
