The gang has been linked to rising cases of insecurity and criminal activities in Shauri Yako slum within Homa Bay Town in the past six months.
The teenagers, including a grade nine pupil, were arrested following a three-day targeted crackdown by officers from Homa Bay Police Station.
Arujo location Chief Bob Lang’o said that a group of suspects, who are members of the gang, on Thursday attacked and injured one resident who attempted to stop them from robbing a woman within Shauri Yako estates.
Lang’o says that the victim was rushed to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital in a critical condition and was later transferred to JOOTRH for specialized treatment.
After the attack, members of the public launched an operation to trace the suspects before police officers intervened and took over the operation.
Homa Bay County police commander Lawrence Koilem confirmed that the 40 suspects were arrested from their hideouts since Thursday, when the operation was started.
Koliem said they have established that the boys are aged between 15 and 19, and some have even active criminal cases in court.
He said the suspects will be arraigned on Monday, warning that the operation will continue to weed out the criminals in Shauri Yako estate.
