15 suspects arrested over plans to disrupt political activities in Nyanza

Police have arrested 15 people along the Kisumu-Kericho Road over allegations of planning to disrupt political activities in the area.

In a statement issued on Sunday, August 16, the National Police Service (NPS) said the suspects were intercepted and arrested on Saturday, August 15, during what it described as an intelligence-led operation.

The police said the suspects were found in possession of various crude weapons and remain in custody pending court arraignment.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that they are hired criminals who allegedly planned to disrupt political activities in the area,” the NPS said.

The arrests come amid heightened political activity in several parts of the country, with the police warning politicians, event organisers and members of the public against actions that could trigger violence or breach public order.

The NPS said officers deployed to political rallies and other public gatherings had been directed to uphold professionalism, impartiality and restraint while facilitating the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.

Police further warned that individuals found facilitating violence, disorder or other unlawful activities would face legal action.

The service urged members of the public to report criminal or suspicious activity at the nearest police stations.

The police reiterated that the service remains nonpartisan and is guided by the Constitution, the National Police Service Act and the rule of law.
