In Sindo, Homa Bay County, a group of determined students from Moi Girls’ High School-Sindo took matters into their own hands—literally—by repairing the road leading to their school—a task they say has become unavoidable in the face of years of neglect.
The road has become a daily hurdle for the students who must navigate its treacherous condition just to get to class. They face long walks made worse by mud during rains and delayed reporting to school.
The students took time out of their school day to patch the damaged road themselves, citing the persistent difficulties they face just to access their education.
“It’s not that we want to do this, but we have no choice,” said one of the students.
“Sometimes we get to school very late because vehicles can’t pass, and when it rains, the road becomes dangerous."
The students hope their small act of self-reliance will lead to change, urging county and national authorities to prioritize rural roads, especially those critical to educational access.
