Fourteen chiefs from Mpeketoni and Mkunumbi Division in Lamu West sub-county were the centre of attraction during the 60th anniversary of Madaraka Day celebrations in Lamu, held at the Mpeketoni Tiger grounds.

The chiefs, clad in their official regalia, warmed the hearts of guests and locals with song and 'dance' during the event.

Residents turned out in large numbers to listen to the choir that has gained popularity in Lamu.

Their songs are mainly centred around societal issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, early pregnancies, education, and social cohesion.

Through their music, the chiefs hope to create awareness and encourage positive change in their communities.

The chiefs have become a recognisable face in their communities, and their unique approach to community service has earned them the love and respect of the locals they serve.

Speaking to Wananchi Reporting, the founder of the choir, Mrs Tabitha Mwangi, who is also the Assistant Chief of Hongwe, said that she started the choir in April 2022 to help the chiefs ventilate since they deal with many challenging issues.

She says the change of approach was meant to serve wananchi better, and give the office a human and friendly face.

The choir members meet every Tuesday and Friday after work to compose new songs and practise.

The choir has become an important part of their community outreach programme, and an effective tool in spreading important messages to the locals.

By using music as a medium of communication, the chiefs have opened up their communities to dialogue and have created a safe space where people can share their concerns and ideas.

The choir is a testament to the power of music and its ability to unite people and inspire positive change in society.

Through their songs, the chiefs are not only educating their communities on important issues, but also instilling values of unity, cooperation and love among residents of Lamu county.
