Race to register for Kisumu City Run hots up as Nyanza eyes athletics

Over 5000 elite and fun runners are already stretching their legs ready to take part in the forthcoming Inaugural Kisumu City Run.

The race will feature 21 km and 10km races for the elite runners, 5km race family fun run, and a 5km tricycle race for people with disabilities.

The inaugural Kisumu City Run race will take place on September 24, on the third day of Kisumu County Tourism Week that will run from September 23 to 27. The event seeks to promote Kisumu Greening Initiative.

The event is one of the many activities organised by the county to commemorate the UN World Tourism Day.

According to the organisers, the race will start and finish at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports ground while the fun run will end at Kisumu Impala Sanctuary.

“According to Athletics Kenya road running regulations, winners of 21km races must get at least Sh250,000. However, we shall decide on the awards for the rest of the top performers,” said Athletics Kenya Nyanza South Secretary Thomas Ongwacho.

All the winners in both the men’s and women’s 21km race will each receive Sh250, 000 – according to Ongwacho. The 10 athletes will also in each event will be awarded medals, trophies and certificates.

Registration for the event started on August 22 during the launch by the Kisumu County Executive Member for Trade, Tourism, Industry and Marketing Farida Salim – and will close at 8am on September 24.

“This is not just going to be about the race. It’s a celebration of community and healthy living, connecting with friends and making friends,” said Salim.

How to enter the Kisumu City Run

Tickets are available at viutickets.com or dial *487*31# to register for the run or buy exhibition space at the Kisumu Tourism Week. Charges are Ksh2,100 for Adults and Ksh1,500 for Kids under 10 years. 6x6M Booth Ksh50,000, 3x3M Booth Ksh. 30,000, Expo Space Only Ksh20,000. Tickets will also be sold at the gate by the Viutickets team.

Organisers said they are hoping to rekindle the spirit of athletics in Kisumu.
