Residents of Githurai 45 on Sunday spent a better part of the day helping with the rescue of trapped passengers following an accident on Thika Superhighway.

The accident occurred around Githurai 45, causing heavy traffic for a better part of the day.

Residents told Wananchi Reporting that the bus fell on its side, and passengers had to be pulled out to safety through the windows.

Vivian Muthoni who witnessed the accident (and took pictures) told Wananchi Reporting that police arrived at the scene moments later – and helped with the rescue efforts – and helped clear the traffic snarl-up.

“The accident only involved one vehicle, the bus, which was carrying passengers and was heading towards Nairobi town. Good Samaritans hurriedly pulled injured passengers from inside the vehicle,” said Muthoni.

“I saw this woman being pulled out through the window. She was covered in blood and looked injured. I think she was rushed to the hospital for medical attention,” added Muthoni.

A recent report from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) showed that 2,124 people died in road accidents from January to June 2023.

A breakdown of the fatalities indicated that more pedestrians were victims of road accidents with 729 recorded fatalities followed by motorcyclists at 561.

The data showed that 403 passengers, 196 pillion passengers and 189 drivers died from road accidents from January to 25 June.
