‘Not boarding’: Karua says on possibility of taking up Attorney General position, says everything has gone south

Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua has continued her onslaught against President William Ruto’s government, saying that there is lack of accountability in the management of public affairs.

During an X Space discussion on Friday by the Diaspora Network Hub in which she was a speaker, Karua said, “The rule of law has all but been abandoned and everything has gone south.”

Meanwhile, she took to her X account to say there was no possibility of her working with Ruto, commenting on someone's post who had said it would be good if she took up the Attorney General position and champion for change.

To that post, she replied, "Not boarding."

During the X Space, Karua said that the Constitution has been interpreted in a "convoluted" manner to fit people since 2010, instead of it being interpreted based on values.

She said after 2013, it has been an "anything goes" situation when it comes to those who qualify to run for office, without regard for Chapter Six of the Constitution on integrity.

"When we have hired people for public office, even competitively, we have been able to manipulate those processes and ended up with people who are not suitable... I'm not saying everyone who has been elected is unsuitable, but we have ended up with people who are not suitable," Karua.

She said Kenya is moving forward and backward at the same time, with the former being seen in the devolution of power, but the latter being seen in the "minting of fresh millionaires and billionaires" through corruption.

Karua said this is killing opportunities for the majority of people.

Her comments come amid her exit from the Azimio coalition, saying that her stay had become untenable.

Narc Kenya party’s Acting Secretary General Asha Bashir made the announcement of the exit to Azimio Secretariat Secretary General Junet Mohamed in a letter dated July 25, 2024.

Bashir, in the letter, cited “prevailing political developments” as one of the reasons for the party’s imminent exit from the opposition political faction.

“Kindly take note that our stay in Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition is not tenable due to the prevailing political developments,” said the NARC-Kenya SG.

The announcement came after President William Ruto on Wednesday nominated four members of Azimio affiliate party ODM to his Cabinet.
