Chaos erupted at the famous Macalder trading centre, in Nyatike sub-county, Migori, pitting a group of locals, the police and a faction said to have been on the convoy of a politician who had visited the area.

The locals reportedly battled the police for hours, after the area MCA Felix Okwanyo, was reportedly assaulted over the famous ‘copper hill’ gold mining spot.

According to the residents, the chaos erupted on Saturday afternoon and lasted late into the evening.

A vehicle belonging to a politician was burned down to ashes in the melee, as police lobbed teargas to disperse residents.

“A number of people were injured in the chaos, and were rushed to hospital in Migori,” said one of the residents.

Two police officers sustained injuries, and had to be rushed to hospital.

MCA Okwanyo was reportedly rushed to hospital for treatment.
