Residents of Kauriro town, Kithengi, Manyatta constituency, have raised concerns about what they term an invasion by houseflies in the area.

The residents said that houseflies are usually a problem around December, but this year, the flies have been causing havoc since the beginning of September.

Traders say they have been among the worst affected because the houseflies make it difficult for customers to sit down and enjoy their meal, while at the same time, their establishments are left looking unhygienic.

“We have experienced a decline in customers eating at our restaurants and this is bringing about losses,” one restauranteur said.

The situation has been aggravated by a water shortage in the area, which has put residents at risk of contracting diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

The residents have urged the county government of Embu to find a solution to the problem.
