PCEA Township Church Kitengela on Sunday stopped its services and held a two-minute silence to honour the two young men who reportedly died during the recent protests in Nairobi over Finance Bill 2024.

“The death of the two young men is sad and should not have happened especially because these were peaceful demonstrations,” noted Bishop Peter Kinyanjui Kariuki, the preacher of the day – becoming one of the many Men of the Cloth who have come out to openly speak on the current state of things.

“As a country we need to have an open and candid discussion about many things, even the state of the economy,” said the Bishop.

Rex Kanyike, 29, died after being shot during the demonstrations in Nairobi. The second victim, Evans Kiratu, a 21-year-old protester, died after being hit by a tear gas canister during protests. He died shortly after being rushed to hospital.

Meanwhile, President William Ruto while attending a church service on Sunday, June 23, said he was proud of the youth.

The President said: “I am very proud of our young people for stepping forward, tribeless and peaceful. I assure them that we are concerned about their issues. In this year’s budget, I have enhanced digital jobs because we acknowledge the challenge of unemployment in the county.”
