A family in Kanjinji village, Mwea, Kirinyaga, is in celebration after their daughter, who was serving a life sentence, was released after being locked up for 16 years.

Jane Karimi was found guilty of murder and  was  serving a life sentence at Langata women's prison before  a successful appeal and family intervention.

Narrating how she ended up in jail, Karimi said, "A fight erupted between me and my brother, Zachariah  Wachira, when I accidentally hit his child with a blunt object and he died after five days. I was arrested and taken to Wang'uru police station and after investigations, I was jailed for life. I have served at Embu women's prison and Langata women's prison, where I served last."

She said she was happy to be 'in the world' again.'

Karimi 's mother,  Beatrice Muthoni, 85, wept after seeing her 38-year-old daughter after 16 years  in prison.

"I can't believe it , my daughter is now with me here, I have been taking care of her children despite my age," she said.

According to Karimi's relatives, led by  Dickson Mutahi, her husband left their children immediately she was arrested.

"We have been helping my mother to take care of her four children. After she was arrested," he said.

The family held celebrations at the Great victory pentecostal church of God at Kimbimbi, with the pastor, Bancy Muthoni,  saying Karimi is now born again.
