Residents of Nyama Villa estate in Embakasi East, and parts of Kayole, have for months been grappling with endless power outages.

According to the residents – a week hardly passes without them experiencing three to four power outages.

“Power blackouts are now becoming a major concern in this area. I here it has something to do with transformers that keep blowing up leaving the whole estate in darkness,” said Joshua Muluma, a resident of the area.

Residents told Wananchi Reporting that Kenya Power officials have been coming to the estate regularly, but the problem has refused to go.

The endless power outages especially those that occur in the evening – and extending into the night – are hurting businesses.

“Most of us are forced to close our businesses early whenever there is blackout because of security concerns,” said a trader in the area.

“It’s not safe to open your business in darkness because you never know how safe your business is. That’s why we are forced to close early and go home,” he said.

Traders in the area who run businesses that are powered by electricity told Wananchi Reporting that they are often left counting losses.

These include water refill kiosks, milk ATMs, internet service providers, salons and barbershops, and to some extent bars and clubs.

Households in the area are often left sitting in darkness with nothing to power their TVs, fridges, Wi-Fi and other electrical appliances.

The residents want the issue to be addressed given the area has a huge population.
