Isiolo teachers hold demos demanding better pay as union officials 'warn' tutors going to class against 'betrayal'

Isiolo teachers participate in nationwide strike.

As the nationwide teachers’ strike enters day two, tutors in Isiolo held protests at the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) branch office, demanding that government

Implement the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed in 2021.

Kenya Union of Post Primary Teachers (KUPPET) union branch chairperson, Moses Kimwere, called on the government to hire 46,000 junior secondary teachers on permanent contracts, promote 130,000 teachers, hire 20,000 new teachers and ensure that payments are made to the relevant bodies after statutory deductions are made, as well as medical cover provided.

The teachers said they will not return to class if their complaints are not heard, and their demands are not fully met.

Kimwere also warned head teachers against threatening tutors not to participate in the national strike.

He urged teachers who have received threats to report to the union branch office for action.

Kimwere said, “Teachers who go to the classroom will forcibly be expelled… betrayal of any kind will not be tolerated.”

KUPPET branch treasurer, Priscilah Wanja, said that the government has degraded the status of the teaching profession, so much so that children and young people no longer wish to become teachers.

He urged all teachers to cooperate to liberate the dignity of their profession.

Daniel Muriuki, a member of KUPPET Isiolo branch, accused the government departments of giving contradictory information about the availability of funds to implement the demands of teachers.
