Motorists stranded at Tula, along the Mwingi-Garissa road
Motorists plying the route said they have camped at Tula area since last night after flash floods cut off transport.
"We have camped here for hours now. I was delivering parcels to Garissa but with the current situation, I am forced to wait for the water levels to reduce," Joseph Mutunga, a driver, said.
Passengers have not been spared, as they have been forced to sleep in buses, with no help in sight.
"We slept in the cold. We could not move beyond this point so we had to spend the night in the bus," a passenger told Citizen Digital.
They have appealed to the government to offer any form of support, as they have no access to food or water.
"There is no nearby centre around here so we cannot buy food or water. We have not had anything to eat or drink since we got stuck," another added.
Meanwhile, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), has called for patience from those using the route to allow water levels to subside before they can proceed with their journey.
Taking to X, KeNHA noted that they are on site to help restore traffic flow through the affected section of the road.
"Traffic flow along the Thika - Garissa Road (A3) has been affected by floods at Arer, approximately 41kms from Bangali Town. The right hand side of the Road has been washed away following the ongoing flooding, which overwhelmed the adjacent box culverts," the Authority said.
According to the government, 33 counties in the country are experiencing heavy rains, with others on high alert.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said the government has put in measures to mitigate the situation and help those who have been affected.
Gachagua further called on Counties to allocate and release funds to complement mitigation efforts, and to unclog waterways and other drainage systems in their respective urban areas.
