Police in Bomet are holding a 16-year-old girl on suspicion she may have procured an abortion before throwing the foetus inside a latrine.

It took members of the public and police two hours to retrieve the foetus from a 20 feet latrine.

Area Assistant Chief Andrew Koech confirmed the incident.

According to the chief, the foetus was discovered by residents of the village.

“The residents informed the police who rushed to the scene and helped to retrieve the body,” he said.

“After gathering information the police arrested a young girl who remains a suspect,” added the suspect.

Reports indicate that the suspect may have terminated her pregnancy before dumping the foetus in the pit latrine.

Police said they are investigating the matter.

The suspect is currently in police custody.

According to reports, which the police are actively investigating, the suspect had terminated the pregnancy citing high cost of living.

The retrieved foetus was taken to Kapkatet county hospital mortuary for preservation.
