Formation of new law to improve rangeland management in Samburu

The process of forming a new law that will improve rangeland management in Samburu County is underway.

The new law will also assist in environmental conservation and improve land productivity in the county.

The formation of a new law process is being facilitated by the Samburu County Government in partnership with Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT).

The county’s Chief officer in charge of water, environmental and natural resources Mr Sam Nakope said that new law will improve regulate and improve management of rangelands in the county.

“There is a greater need to regulate how the environment is being used through grazing patterns, it was important for us as a department to sit down together and discuss with a number of partners to bring their expertise and knowledge into this document to make sure that is all-inclusive and addressing a number of very pertinent issues with regard to rangeland use and management,” he said.

NRT’s Central region Director Mr Abato Lenanyukie urged the county assembly to approve the new law for the benefits of wananchi.

“The communities will now have a framework where they can manage rangeland and protect conservation areas and enhance productivity. I also request the county assembly of Samburu to approve the policy so that it can be implemented for final use,” he said.

Stakeholders among them government officers and locals were invited to Maralal town to be educated on the new law.

The views were also adopted as the new law is expected to be presented to the county’s executive and then county assembly for approval.

The pastoralists said that the new law will enable them to graze in their own areas and benefit from conservation areas and tourism.

Mr. Arkwet Lekumuisa, a resident said: “The new law will help us plan for pasture resources in our land and benefit from other development such as tourism businesses.
