A Form Four student at St. Charles lwanga secondary school in Lugari, Kakamega county, is reported to have died after taking part in a school marathon race.

The deceased, identified as Timothy Akila, aged 20-years, died while receiving treatment at Chekalini Hospital where he was rushed after collapsing.

Akila was participating in a school marathon competition in Chekalini secondary school when he reportedly collapsed.

His father, Fred Amugunya, said he spoke to his son on the fateful morning, before he left home for school.

"I spoke to him in the morning, and he told me he was going for the school games. I left to run my errands as he went for the games,” said Amugunya who never saw his son alive again.

He would later received a call asking him to rush home, that his son had died.

“I don’t know what really happened,” said a distraught Amugunya.

The family is appealing to the government to investigate the incident.

Area chief Julius Mpapale urged parents and teachers to have knowledge of student’s health status especially those participating in sports to avert crisis.
