Residents of Ndururumo area in Juja have expressed concerns over recklessness exhibited by young men at the Ruiru river waterfall.

The youth, oblivious of the danger, often sit at the edge of the fall to enjoy the cool breeze coming from thousands of litres of water smashing into the bottom of the fall.

“My heart skips whenever I see them daring death in such a manner. They say they know how to take care of themselves, but a small miscalculation would result in death,” Patricia Wairimu, a parent, told Wananchi Reporting.

Patrick Mwangi, a young college student prefers the dangerous spot to enjoy the gust while meditating.

“We know the spot is dangerous, but our parents should not be worried too much. We are cautious. You just need to watch your steps,” Mwangi defended their actions.

Many people have reportedly lost their lives at the Theta ward fall, with some of the cases said to be suicide.

A few years ago, a sudden flooding of the river pushed cows to their death at the bottom of the fall. This has, however, not stopped residents from sneaking to the fall for leisure activities.

Mercy Kawira, a resident, fears that children accompanying the adults to the falls could be tempted to visit the spot on their own, and even try dangerous jumps.

“Children hang there too albeit some metres away from the edge but curiosity will draw them there. If you fall, chances of surviving the bang are small. Authorities should take action,” Kwaira said.
