Calls to bring down cost of braille equipment as learners suffer

Thanksgiving service held for Levy Kabesa.

In Thika, one boy rose from the challenges of visual impairment to succeed in his national exam.

Levy Kabesa, who was not born with a visual impairment, narrated how he decided to rise above the challenge and aim for the best.

Speaking during his thanksgiving service held over the weekend, he said, "It was very tough for me and I struggled to get equipment for braille, but I decided not to give up."

A section of parents have called on the government to intervene and bring down the cost of braille equipment for students.

This, as learners with visual impairment struggle to study.

According to the head teacher of Thika Secondary School, Lydia Kyalo, many students have been pushed to use old, worn-out tools to write in braille.

A braille machine is estimated to cost about Ksh. 130,000, an amount that is not easy for many students to afford, as most of them come from low-cost families.

Kabesa urged other learners with visual impairment or other disabilities to stay focused on their dreams and not give up.

He hopes to study law at the University of Nairobi.
