Pesalink has partnered with Strathmore University to host the 2025 AI Fintech Hackathon aimed at empowering student developers to build solutions for real-world payment challenges.
The event, held at
Strathmore University, brought together 150 computer engineering students
tasked with developing AI-powered tools to address failures in bulk transaction
validation—a common issue that leads to delays and unsuccessful payments when
incorrect account details are used.
“At Pesalink, we
are passionate about innovation as a means to creating more inclusive and
seamless payments,” said Plounne Oyunge, Chief Growth Officer at Integrated
Payment Services Limited (IPSL), the operator of Pesalink.
“This hackathon is
more than a competition—it’s a practical step toward solving real
infrastructure challenges, while nurturing the next generation of fintech
innovators who will shape the future of digital finance.”
The students were
mentored by Pesalink’s product and engineering teams and evaluated based on
innovation, scalability, security, and potential impact. Winning teams received
recognition for their solutions.
“Today’s
opportunity was not just about coding. It’s about creating infrastructure that
enhances financial inclusion and supports Kenya’s broader digital economy
goals,” said Michael Gikonyo, Chairperson of the Strathmore Computer
Engineering Students Association (SCESA).
The hackathon
aligns with IPSL’s efforts to foster collaboration and prepare for the rollout
of Kenya’s national Fast Payment System (FPS), reinforcing the importance of
real-time, secure, and accessible digital payments.
