Zoo hold Leopards, Sharks outscore Mathare
Johnson Ligare powered home a late header as Zoo Kericho FC rallied to hold AFC Leopards to a 1-1 draw at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Wednesday.
The strike could turn out to be a valuable point for the visitors who are battling relegation and Leopards will have themselves to blame for not killing off the game much earlier.
Paul Were gave Leopards the ideal start when he squeezed the opener through the goalkeeper’s near post after a darting run down the right wing.
Zoo had the chance to make it 1-1 from the penalty spot but goalkeeper Owade Ezekiel pulled off a superb save to keep out his opposite number before Whyvonne Isuza also missed a penalty on the other end.
Ligare ensured Zoo picked a point when he headed in from a corner in the 87th minute for a result that stretches Leopards’ winless run against the vistors back to 2017.
Elsewhere in Kisumu, Gor Mahia FC restored their seven-point lead at the summit of the KPL after seeing off Chemelil Sugar 2-0 in Kisumu thanks to goals from Kenneth Muguna and Samuel Onyango.
Sofapaka FC had earlier kept their KPL title chances alive with a 2-0 win against Western Stima FC after Kepha Aswani and John Avire scored one goal apiece in the first half.
Bandari FC were 2-0 winners away at Vihiga United thanks to William Wadri’s goal and another from goalkeeper Farouk Shikhalo who beat his counterpart with a comical goal.
Mathare United versus Kariobangi Sharks meanwhile served up a five-goal thriller in Kasarani with the visitors winning 3-2.
Erick Kapaito, Duke Abuya and Julius Masaba all scored for Sharks with Clifford Alwanga and Cliff Nyakeya on target for Mathare.
