The 56-year-old was officially unveiled on Wednesday evening by the Mbeya-based outfit, signaling a new chapter in his coaching journey and his first-ever stint outside Kenya.
Zico’s appointment comes in the wake of a troubled season with Gor Mahia, where he and his entire technical bench were shown the door following a trophyless 2023/24 campaign.
Under his guidance, the record 21-time FKF Premier League champions failed to defend their league title, which was instead claimed by Kenya Police FC.
Adding to the disappointment was a 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Nairobi United in the FKF Cup final on June 29, a result that sparked discontent among fans and triggered sweeping changes in the club’s technical department.
For Tanzania Prisons, Zico’s arrival represents a fresh start after a difficult season of their own. The club finished 13th in the 16-team Tanzanian top flight, collecting 31 points, just eight above the relegation zone.
He replaces Amani Josiah, who was let go after a string of poor results.
The club is now pinning its hopes on Zico’s tactical knowledge and leadership to steer them clear of another relegation scare and restore some competitive consistency.
Known for his calm demeanor and structured approach, Zico brings with him experience from stints at KCB, Posta Rangers and assistant coach of Harambee Stars.
He becomes the second Kenyan coach to take charge of the club, following in the footsteps of former KCB and Kakamega Homeboyz tactician Patrick Odhiambo, who guided them during a previous campaign till January 2023.
As the new Tanzanian league season approaches, Zico’s appointment offers both him and the club a much-needed fresh start.
With his reputation on the line and a new environment to conquer, all eyes will be on whether the veteran coach can bounce back and deliver results across the border.
