Wazito pull weight to wash ‘Chemicals’
Wazito kept their promotion quest to the Kenyan Premier League alive with an emphatic 5-0 mauling of Agro Chemical in a National Super League tie at Camp Toyoyo grounds on Sunday .
The huge victory is a boost to the Frank Ouna coached side after top placed Ushuru and KCB slipped on Saturday.
With the league battle down to the wire after the top two sides dropped points, Ouna’s side was out to take advantage of the slip- ups, and his boys did it in style, dispatching the Chemicals with relative ease.
In-form Kennedy Ayako was the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick, while Piston Mutamba and Samson Ndegwa were also on target to seal the win.
Mutamba who has been lethal this season rose to head in a Joakim Omolo corner in the second minute, in what may turn out to be fastest goal in the second-tier competition this term. The strike was Mutamba’s 13th this season.
Struggling Agro’s only chance came at the quarter hour mark when Jackson Maina’s attempt skewed over the bar after winning a free kick at the edge of the area .
Wazito continued their domination in the second half with on song Ayako completing his hat-trick in the 56th and 61st minutes, largely driven by Agro’s poor defending.
Following the huge victory, Wazito leapt to 71 points, within reaching distance of leaders Ushuru, who are just a point above them on the log.
This now makes for an intriguing duel for the two automatic promotion slots on offer, with just three matches left to the end of the campaign.
Third placed KCB on 70 points, and fourth placed Vihiga United on 68 points, all have realistic chances of bagging the promotion tickets, and as the battle heads to the wire, there will be no margin for error for each side.
Elsewhere, Nairobi Stima thrashed Kenya Police 2-1 at the Sher Karuturi grounds in Naivasha with Patrick Ndwiga scoring a brace for Stima, while Kevin Kwasa pulled a consolation for Police.
