Vihiga Queens to play friendlies against Ugandan, Tanzanian teams to mark 10-year anniversary
As part of celebrating their decade-long stay at the helm of
Kenyan football, four times Women Premier League Champions Vihiga Queens are
set to play high-profile friendlies involving teams from Tanzania and Uganda to
mark the feat.
Club’s Chief Executive Officer Michael Senelwa Ogada told
Citizen Digital the friendlies will serve as part of their pre-season
preparations.
Vihiga who are the first Cecafa team to represent the region
in CAF Women’s Champions League Finals, when they participated in the 2021
edition in Cairo Egypt will celebrate 10 years of excellence in women football
by playing matches against Tanzania heavyweights Jeshi la Kujenga Taifa (JKT)
and their Ugandan side Kampala Queens. This will precede a gala set for Saturday
night at Sosa Cottages in Gisambai Vihiga County.
“Before the new season commences, we have decided to
celebrate our 10th year of excellence in women football by inviting the two
clubs. JKT are currently en route to Kenya via Namanga road and they are expected
to arrive in Nairobi in the evening where they will spend the night and
continue their journey to western Kenya tomorrow. Kampala, on the other hand,
will travel tomorrow [Wednesday] and are expected to arrive in the evening,’
Ogada said.
“We will have a series of friendly matches between the three
nations clubs whereby on Thursday Vihiga will play Kampala Queens at the Mumias
Sports Complex from 1PM before facing JK Queens on Saturday at 1PM at the same
Venue, followed by a gala.
“This will be a very crucial and memorable moment for the
team as we will use the matches to gauge our players ahead of the new
season,”Ogada explained. “It’s an opportunity also to market the club not only
in the East Africa region but across Africa considering that the clubs have
players beyond Cecafa borders. It’s a chance also to scout talents among the
clubs and see if we can engage in business so I urge my players to use the
moment well. I also take this opportunity to welcome all our fans and football
stakeholders to the gala.”
The Queens finished second in the FKF Women Premier League last season with 41 points.
