Vihiga County picks formidable teams for Western Region Primary School Games

Vihiga County Primary and Junior Schools Sports Association is confident of impressing in this year’s Western Region games set for Busia this week, banking on the 'wonderful' team selected for the fiesta.

Association’s Treasure Evans Carlos Akunda who spoke after completion of the selection process of the team which will represent Vihiga County in Busia said they have a formidable team capable of bringing glory back home. 

“We are going to present our best this year and our opponents should prepare well for us. It is not going to be business as usual," Akunda said, revealing that the Vihiga team has hit camp immediately for two days at the Maseno Vocational Training Centre after curtains fell on the County finals Sunday at the same venue.

Apart from the track and field events that usually characterize term one school games Akunda says pupils will be battling it out in basketball, swimming and handball at the regional level this year.

“In the three disciplines Mumboha Primary School Girls team, Ebunangwe Primary Boys from Luanda and Emuhya will appear for Vihiga in the basketball competitions.

"Kitulu Primary School Girls and Hambale Primary Boys have qualified to represent Vihiga in handball competitions as we pin our hopes on Mudasa Academy to bring home the swimming trophy,” Akunda stated.

Akunda however expects stiff competition from Bungoma and Kakamega teams, Chris Juma head coach for Mumboha Basketball 5x5 team is bullish that his teams will sail through the competition’s favourites to the nationals.

“Our 19-2 wins against Kaimosi and 8-0 victory over Kerongo at the County finals has boosted our morale hence other Counties should be prepared for a serious bruising. Our target is featuring in the national Competitions this year,” Juma said.

His sentiments were echoed by Anita Vuguza Kitulu Primary handball captain who said after defeating Emuhaya 8-1, Luanda 7-1, Sabatia 10-0 and Hamisi team 10-0 her team will impress in the competitions.
