Gor Mahia FC moved nine points clear at the top of the Kenyan Premier League table after edging out Mathare United FC 2-1 in a thrilling encounter on Saturday at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

K’Ogalo were aggressive from the opening whistle, pressing high and forcing errors from United’s backline. Despite their dominance, Gor Mahia struggled to break the deadlock in the first half, with Mathare’s defense holding firm.

At the break, head coach Charles Akonnor made decisive changes, introducing Ebenezer Assifuah, Paul Ochuoga and Bryton Onyona in place of Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw, Lewis Nandi and Levin Odhiambo in search of a breakthrough.

The tactical switch paid off in the 67th minute when substitute Assifuah latched onto a well-timed through ball from Jackson Dwang and slotted past the Mathare goalkeeper to give Gor the lead.

Mathare United responded strongly and drew level in the 83rd minute through Dennis Okoth, who capitalized on a defensive lapse after Gor failed to clear their lines.

However, Gor Mahia had the final say. With four minutes remaining, Assifuah was brought down inside the box, earning his side a penalty. Enock Morrison stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to seal a crucial victory.

The win took Gor Mahia’s points tally to 49, extending their advantage over second-placed AFC Leopards to nine points as the title race intensifies.
