Tusker thwart Zoo, Homeboyz go top of KPL

Tusker FC trailed into the last quarter-hour but they struck twice in the closing period to defeat Zoo FC 2-1 and seal their first Kenyan Premier League (KPL) win of the season on Sunday at the Kericho Green Stadium.

After  a barren opening half, Rogers Aloro diverted the ball into his own net to hand Zoo the lead but Timothy Otieno and Luke Namanda hit back late on.

At the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos champions Gor Mahia FC kept their one hundred percent start intact by beating KCB FC 2-1 thanks to first half goals from Francis Afriyie and Lawrence Juma. Enock Agwanda scored KCB’s lone goal.

In the earlier kick-off played at the same venue Villa Oromchan scored to power Western Stima to their first win of the season after edging Posta Rangers 1-0.

Sofapaka FC demolished Chemelil Sugar 4-0 with strikes from Timothy Wanyonyi, Elly Asieche and a Brian Nyakan double ensuring the hosts picked maximum points for the first time this season in style.

Elsewhere at the Bukhungu Stadium Kakamega Homeboyz stunned Kariobangi Sharks 3-0 for a result that steered them to the summit of the KPL standings, joint on seven points with Bandari FC who defeated Sony Sugar 1-0 in Awendo.

Goalkeeper Emery Mvuyekure was called to action inside five minutes, saving an early free-kick after Eugene Asike had fouled Derrick Anami at the edge of the area.

Eric Zakayo rounded Zoo goalkeeper Martin Elungat on the other end but failed to apply enough power on his effort at goal and Johnstone Ligare arrived quickly to sweep it away.

Mike Madoya’s fired a fierce attempt at his former employers but it was pushed away by Elungat and Kevin Okoth fluffed the rebound.

Zoo too the lead at the hour-mark courtesy of Aloro’s own goal and Tusker thought they had found an instant reply only for George Odhiambo’s strike to be ruled out for offside.

Otieno pulled the visitors level with 1 minutes left on the clock and Namanda won it in stoppage time witha remarkable debut goal.
