Trinity Starlets hope to continue breaking barriers after FKF women’s league break
FKF Women Premier League debutants and current league leaders, Trinity
Starlets, assistant coach Moses Juma has termed the two-week break in the league as a
blessing in disguise, as it will allow them to work on the weaknesses he has witnessed in the last three rounds of matches.
Though Juma did not reveal the
details of what he expects
his charges to get right, he welcomed the break
saying it will provide them an opportunity to work on their undoing so far, before they
face out-of-form Kisumu All Starlets away in Kisumu.
The team is the only side in the league to register a 100 per cent record into the new season, having not dropped any point nor
conceding a single goal. Trinity started the league by
thrashing Bunyore Starlets 3-0, before flooring Kibera
Soccer Ladies 1-0 and
defeating Wadadia FC 2-0 in their last match.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Juma said they had
not thought they would
top the league table, but gained confidence after winning their opening
match which increased in their subsequent matches and they now
believe that they can go all the way.
“If you look at how we have played in the last three
matches, it has given us confidence and now we believe if we get some details
right we can beat anyone. Though there are teams that have played at this level
for longer than us but we are ready and we can go all the way,” said an optimistic Juma.
“We have not dropped points and we have not lost a match, nor have we
conceded a single goal in the last three matches. This tells you we’re headed
somewhere. We are aiming to finish the first round on top then see what happens
in the second round but I believe in my girls and they have shown they can,” he added.
Players say they are enthusiastic and that their mood in
the team is very high. The team has had a very formidable defence line led by captain and
right-back Floice Khanali, centre-back Irene Lipesa and goalkeeper Juliet
Adhiambo in between the sticks.
“We feel good topping the table, we never thought we would be here
after such a time but this has demonstrated that we can go all the way, other
ladies have been underrating us for we are younger than them, but when
we get on the pitch ours is to have the work done,” said captain Floice
Khanali.
On her
part, keeper Adhiambo said, “I thank my defence line
which has co-operated with me to ensure that I have not conceded any goal in the
last three outings and this means I have three clean sheets.”
“We thank the church for having offered us an opportunity to showcase
our talents. In the Premier League chances of being scouted are very high so
it’s our deep desire to see ourselves getting national team call ups,” noted Lipesa.
Trinity Starlets, who are under the
management of Trinity Methodist Church, Nyandarua, was formed three years ago
by Arch-Bishop Josam Kariuki who decided to use football to uplift the youth,
particularly young women.
The team were to play their
matches at the ‘Nyayo’ Stadium in Olkalou, Nyandarua County but due to lack of a Premier League
certified stadia, the team was forced to move their home matches to ASK Showgrounds
in Nakuru.
“We are playing our home matches away from home. Nakuru ASK
Showground is 74 kilometres from Olkalou, Nyandarua, and this move is denying
the girls the privilege of playing in front of their home fans. We remind the
President [Ruto] to fulfil the promise of having the Olkalou Stadium
completed. Upon his election he came to Nyandarua and assured us that the
facility would be complete in six months but nothing has happened,” stated
Kariuki.
Trinity Starlets are topping the table with nine
points, two above Kenya Police Bullets and Vihiga Queens who are second and
third respectively. Trinity take on Kisumu All Starlets in their next league match to be played at the Moi Stadium, Kisumu.
