Thika out to rekindle dying fire against struggling Wazito

Thika United head coach John Njogu will be leading his team against fellow relegation threatened side Wazito FC at home hoping to get a taste of victory for the first time since May 27 over Vihiga United at the Mumias Sports Complex.

Njogu is however wary of his opponents acknowledging their draw (0-0) in the previous game against Nzoia Sugar gives them a mental boost, but remains optimistic that as the hosts, home advantage will prove vital.

“It is a very crucial game for both teams considering we are in relegation fight. It is a must win game for us but for that to happen, we will have to work hard for the maximum points.

“Wazito will come with a strong mentality after that one point last week but we are the home side, so that is an advantage in itself,” noted Njogu.

The former Kiambu Allstars tactician who was roped in early May has only managed two victories in ten games that he has been in charge of, is aware of their major undoing in their streak of poor performances. At the same time, he remains adamant that his side will play in the top tier next season despite their poor form.

“In most games that we have lost, it’s been a matter of defensive lapses and lack of concentration especially in the final minutes where we have conceded heavily. I have talked to my players and hopefully they will be in the game until it is over and not have those mistakes reoccur,” Njogu said.

He went on: “No one wants to have their team relegated. We are in that position but with the remaining games starting with Wazito, we still have a chance to save our season and escape from the drop,” Njogu added.

Thika United are tied on points with Wazito on 20, the latter having played a game more with both teams future in the top flight, hanging in the balance as the league enters the home stretch.
