Stakeholders Persist in Advocating for Mombasa to Host 2027 AFCON

Football stakeholders are urging the national government to build a state-of-the-art stadium in Mombasa as preparations for hosting AFCON 2027 intensify.

Hussein Mohammed, CEO of Extreme Sports, emphasized the city's potential to host a continental tournament during his attendance at the Bandari versus Gor Mahia match in Mombasa over the weekend. He highlighted Mombasa's passionate football community as a key factor in its suitability for such an event.

"I fully endorse President William Ruto's commitment to construct an AFCON stadium in Mombasa. I'm certain that players and residents alike will be thrilled to welcome teams from across the country to this coastal city," said Mohammed.

Hussein, who is also vying for the top Football Kenya Federation seat, emphasized the crucial role of good infrastructure in enhancing the quality of Kenyan leagues and attracting investors.

"We must prioritize investment in our league and improve our capacity management. Building our league from the grassroots up can create employment opportunities for our youth. It's an achievable goal; all it requires is investment today, along with transparent accountability and integrity within the federation," he added.

Additionally, Hussein called for unity among football stakeholders to ensure effective preparation for the continental tournament and to meet the high expectations of Kenyans.

"While the government is committed and Kenyans are enthusiastic, we must act swiftly. AFCON preparation requires collaboration from all stakeholders: a strong federation, engaged fans, and the support of all Kenyans. Ivory Coast set a remarkable precedent in the last AFCON, and we must aim even higher."

Kenya is set to co-host the 2027 AFCON with Uganda and Tanzania, with Morocco hosting the next edition in 2025.
