South Africa's U20 side, Amajita, made history on Sunday night by winning their first-ever U20 Africa Cup of Nations title by defeating Morocco 1-0 in the final held in Egypt.

The decisive moment came in the 70th minute when midfielder Gomolemo Kekana fired home a superb goal after racing onto a long-range pass from goalkeeper Fletcher Smythe-Lowe.

The goal was confirmed by VAR and proved to be the winner, crowning South Africa as continental champions for the first time at this level.

“It was a difficult game and the boys knew it could be but they stick to what we believe and it won us the game and the tournament,” said South Africa's coach Raymond Mdaka.

All four semi finalists have now qualified for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile later this year.

The Young Atlas Lions applied early pressure but squandered several chances, with Fouad Zahouani and Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal both failing to convert.

Sunday’s win marked revenge for South Africa, who had lost to Morocco in the 1997 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations final, where the match ended 1-0 in Morocco's favour.

Egypt’s U-20 team missed out on a podium finish in the continental tournament after losing 4-1 in a penalty shootout to Nigeria, following a 1-1 draw in regular time at the Air Defence Stadium in Cairo early on Sunday.

It took Egypt only three minutes to open the scoring through Omar Hassan who tapped in from Ahmed Shariff's cross to give the hosts an early lead which lasted to the break.

At the beginning of the second half, substitute Bidemi Amole leveled matters for Nigeria and forced the match to be decided through penalties.

Nigeria brought in reserved goalkeeper Rufai Abubakar who saved two penalties to hand Nigeria a strong finish.
