Sofapaka hit with transfer ban over Ameyaw release
Sofapaka FC will not be allowed to register new
players until they clear the wages for Jedinak Nana Ameyaw, who was released by
the FKF Premier League club early this year.
Sofapaka released the Ghanaian striker for what it
described as 'continued dismal performances' from the player, terminating his
contract that still had one year left to run.
But FIFA said Sofapaka must pay out the rest of that
contract, valued at around 1.4 million shillings per year as it announced it
was imposing a transfer ban on the club until the condition is met.
Ameyaw is also claiming 110,000 shillings in legal
fees.
Jacobs Faina, Bryson Juma, David Simiyu, Collins
Wakhungu, Isaiah Wakasala and Nigerian striker Michael Karamor are the other
players that were released along with Ameyaw.
The FKF has been ordered to implement a domestic ban
as well, meaning Batoto ba Mungu cannot bring on board local-based players.
Club president Elly Kalekwa was unavailable for a
comment as his phone went unanswered but in an earlier interview with BBC sport
Africa Kalekwa insisted they will clear the debts soon to get a clearance to
get new players.
"We have every intention of paying the money very
soon, it's just we have had problems with funding," the Congolese
businessman told BBC Sport Africa.
Gor Mahia, Wazito and AFC Leopards are other teams
that have been banned, recently, from signing new players after dismissing
former players. But their bans were lifted after eventually paying the debt
owed.
