Kenya Sevens team made a dream start to their World Rugby Series promotion campaign in Madrid, Spain by beating Samoa 19-12 in their opening Pool B match played on Friday evening at the Civitas Metropolitano Stadium.

Shujaa started brilliantly as co-captain Vincent Onyala led from the front touching down for Shujaa's first try with fellow captain Tony Omondi adding the extras for a 7-0 lead.

Moments later Patrick Odongo announced his arrival in the grand finale as he went over the white wash for Kenya's second try.

Samoa hit back with two quick tries and one conversion leaving the scores even at half time.

There were tense exchanges between the two familiar foes but Kenya held their nerve to maintain the scores level.

After a successful turnover by Kenya, Patrick Odongo once again showed why he is Kenya's danger man as he blitzed the Samoan defense to land another try between the sticks with Tony Omondi, adding the extras to claim a much needed 19-12 win against Samoa.

Kenya will face hosts Spain at 10:18pm local time on Friday.

Shujaa are in Pool B alongside hosts Spain, Samoa and Chile and will need a flawless performance in the group stages to punch their ticket to the quarter final.

Pool A has Germany, USA, Uruguay and Canada.

Kenya will need to win at least two pool matches to guarantee a spot in the quarter finals.
